Artist Statement

This is my brain. The image hints at the complexity, yet also shows its beauty. It shows the vulnerability and somehow hints at its resilience.

Bottom left (yellow), you can see the large hemorrhage around the tumor in my occipital lobe (which was surgically removed the following morning), and there is also a smaller (pink) tumor on the right in the cerebellum.

Though it hints at the source of cancer's destructive capabilities, the beauty of the layers struck me as a wonderful contrast.

Book 52 views of cancer

52 Views of Cancer

52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.

The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
