Artist Statement

This work emerged from a period of profound transformation, shaped by my family's experience with cancer and the emotional journey that accompanied it. I found myself paying closer attention to the natural world the cycles of growth, decay, renewal, and resilience that exist all around us. Nature became both a source of comfort and a metaphor for healing as I witnessed my grandmother and uncle recover from cancer, while also experiencing the loss of my aunt to the disease.

The imagery in this piece reflects an inner landscape as much as an external one. Layers of color, organic forms, and shifting patterns symbolize the complexity of navigating uncertainty, fear, hope, grief, and recovery. Rather than focusing on illness itself, I wanted to create a work that speaks to endurance, regeneration, and the capacity to find beauty even in difficult circumstances.

As an artist, I often draw from memories, cultural traditions, and my relationship to nature. Through this work, those influences intertwine with my experiences of vulnerability and strength. The process of making became a way to reflect on change, honor those I have lost, and celebrate the resilience of those who continue to heal.

The vibrant colors represent moments of joy and gratitude that became more vivid through these experiences. The layered compositions suggest the many visible and invisible experiences that shape us over time. Just as a garden continues to grow after a storm, this work reflects the possibility of renewal following hardship.

Creating this piece reminded me that healing is rarely linear. It is a continual process of growth, reflection, remembrance, and transformation. By sharing this work, I hope to offer a sense of connection and encouragement to others who have been touched by cancer, whether through their own diagnosis or through the experiences of loved ones. It is ultimately a celebration of resilience, the ability to move forward while carrying the memories and experiences that have shaped us.

This artwork stands as a testament to love, loss, survival, gratitude, and the enduring power of creativity to help us make meaning from our experiences.

Book 52 views of cancer

52 Views of Cancer

52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.

The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
