Artist Statement

I noticed the strength and fragility that rose petals possess. The tightness of a bud, and then the unfurling. That reminded me of us who receive a diagnosis- we tighten up and then open to healing. I knew other people struggling with cancer besides me. I had DCIS, they had other forms. So the colors represent all forms. I and some of the others had radiation as part of their treatment I placed the petals on a white fabric with a flashlight behind and prayed for healing light to radiate to, in, and through me. This became a meditation petals for me and still is. Elements of Healing represents the layers of the variety of elements used in researching for a cure and bringing healing to cancer patients and comfort to their families. I am inspired by how all things are available and how so many of us take these elements and healing for granted until we are hard pressed to seek for it. Hope is whimsical, fun and lighthearted. We can't really get through very well without hope for a cure, hope for healing, hope for comfort, for ourselves and others, including our providers and caretakers.

Book 52 views of cancer

52 Views of Cancer

52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.

The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
