Artist Statement

Created during my treatment for breast cancer, this self-portrait is a visual image of my arduous chemotherapy treatment. My closed eyes represent turning inward to a space of quiet melancholy and processing. While I was fortunate to have so many people supporting me during this difficult time, I often found myself going within to find hope, courage, resilience and healing. It appears my expression is one of sadness, but it is also one of meditation and self-reclamation. To counter the stark reality of baldness, I crowned my head with a vibrant growth of purple and teal flowers. They are a reminder that like flowers my hair would bloom again. This piece is a message to myself and others, that even in our most vulnerable times, we are capable of finding hope and healing from within.

Book 52 views of cancer

52 Views of Cancer

52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.

The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
