Brain

My mother was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer a few years ago. Adapting to the new normal was difficult as our family navigated the healthcare system and tried to help make the right decisions for her care. Today she is stable, thanks to a series of different treatments and her own iron will. I hope for all cancer patients to have access to life-saving drugs and care. This piece shows the word 'brain' in Korean, which represents one of the areas of my mother's body that was found with cancer. By way of slow-stitching, I was able to reflect on and come to terms with my emotions.
52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.
The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
