I painted this as the final part of a series that I didn’t understand before I was diagnosed with brain cancer. Looking back, it makes sense now. I think it represents having to die to your old self before you can be reborn into the true presence, freedom, and life that awaits you. Sometimes that rebirth is facilitated through undesirable circumstances. This painting is a reflection of the bridge between the complete collapse of my old identity and the more authentic self that I am unraveling now. It’s titled Emerge for this reason.
52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.
The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
