Gratitude
Mixed media - paper mache' hands, applique and hand embroidery
The piece “Gratitude” was inspired by my second breast cancer diagnosis, which was followed by a bilateral mastectomy and DIEP flap reconstruction.
Instead of focusing on the reality of facing cancer twice, I chose to focus on my gratitude for surviving it twice. I am deeply grateful for my journey, especially knowing that so many others have a different story. Working on this piece was incredibly cathartic, and I love the mindfulness that comes with hand embroidery. Note the background wording listing some of the many things I am grateful for!
As a self-taught mixed-media artist with an emphasis on fiber arts, I am on a lifelong journey to express myself creatively, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to do so.
52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.
The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
