My grandfather on my mother's side died of cancer at thirty-seven years old, long before I was born. My mother, who was eight at the time, suffered from this loss and it carried through into the lives of me and my siblings. My mother is now in recovery from breast cancer and has taken her last treatment of chemotherapy. I myself am only one year younger than my grandfather when he died of cancer. I have been thinking a lot about how interconnected we all are, and how much more than genes can be passed on.
52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.
The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
