Artist Statement

Adrift on the open seas. A life raft seemingly just out of reach. One, relentless, wave, after, another. Rising and dropping like its play thing. Historical echoes, from Hokusai’s menacing wave. Seemingly alone with the accusation: It’s Cancer. You search your family history, has anyone else been here? Did they reach the shore? You feel so alone. One’s first response is: Will I get through this? You’ve forgotten the medical specialist’s question is: How will we get through this? For there is another side. It is possible to make it through. There are calm seas ahead. Just ride the tide. ************* (Aahhh) You await the confirmation. Once pronounced you will be off to the marathons. Treatment begins. As isolating as this threatens, there is a rudder that keeps you afloat and oriented. Your support team and your closest, they help hold you upright. Reciprocal relationships embrace your efforts and give you a different why. This isn’t simply your battle, it’s theirs too. The stats don’t even start to measure all of those impacted. The fight is ours, together. ********************* (Bound) As much as we realize there will be striving and effort to come, none the less, there are bound to be days not as good as the rest.

Book 52 views of cancer

52 Views of Cancer

52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.

The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
