Heartfelt Journey

Artist Statement

Our journey in this life is bittersweet. When you find out your father's body is riddled with cancer, all the moments of love and adventure with him come flooding in at once. My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer several years ago and with radiation, he beat it. However, it came back aggressively this past January. After several tests, he found out it had metastasized into his bones, shoulders, spine etc. We created a plan and started chemo. Chemo kicked his ass. When he had his first treatment, he couldn't breathe and the nurses came rushing in to give him Benadryl and stop the chemo treatment. Several hours later, with grit, he finished the treatment. Things only worsened from there and after more testing, doctors found that he has a rare form of Leukemia in his spine. This week is my parents' 60th wedding anniversary. He is at home, stable, but not up for a party. He gets winded frequently. We are making the challenging decision whether he continues treatments, all the meds, sickly hospitalization, or remains home with very little medication and just enjoys his time while still here with us. Our lives are precious. Each heart in my painting means something digerent to everyone who views it. Our lives are made up of heartfelt adventures, moments and love.

Book 52 views of cancer

52 Views of Cancer

52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.

The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
