Oil on canvas
I didn’t begin with any clear idea of what I wanted to paint. After my initial diagnosis, I was just slapping oil paint on a canvas, trying to fill the quiet hours and soothe my anxious mind, letting color stand in for words I didn’t have yet. As the image slowly took shape, a woman emerged who looked very much like I felt: bracing against a storm, under a barrage of uncertainty, with what felt like a very thin layer of protection. I like her — vulnerable yet determined, and a little fierce — and I try to carry a bit of this attitude with me to every doctor’s appointment and infusion day.
52 Views of Cancer is a deck of playing cards illustrated by people who know cancer firsthand. Each of the 52 cards carries original artwork by a different cancer patient, survivor, or immediate family member, each with their own view of the disease.
The artwork comes first. We're bringing the deck to major scientific and medical conferences and putting these artists' work directly into the hands of the researchers and clinicians working on the cancers they've faced.
